Firefighter Injured in Fairfax Blaze

No residents were injured.

Firefighters responded to a blaze at a two-story single family home this afternoon. One firefighter was transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire at 4809 Briggs Road (west of Shirley Gate Road) was reported just before 1:30 p.m., Fairfax County Fire Rescue Department officials said. No residents were injured in the fire, said Captain Jason Jenkins, a spokesman for the department.

“The fire is now under control, but there was significant damage to the second floor,” Jenkins said.

As of 2:40 p.m., firefighters were still working on what Jenkins called “hot pockets” within the home. Most of the damage was sustained to the second story.

About 65 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire.

Neighbor Quentin Maves was eating lunch this afternoon with his wife when they both heard a siren barreling down the street.

“We went outside and saw a fire truck going by,” Maves said. As he got closer to the home just about a block away, Maves said he “saw flames shooting through the roof and lots of smoke.”

The cause of the fire as well as the exact monetary damage to the home is under investigation.
