Fire at Car Dealership Shuts Down Portion of University Drive

The fire broke out in a storage facility.

A fire in a storage area at Jim McKay Chevrolet at 3509 University Dr. near Fairfax Boulevard/Route 50 shut down a portion of University Drive late Tuesday morning.

A second alarm for the fire was called when part of the fire spread to the ventilation system, according to county emergency alerts.

Fortunately, City of Fairfax fire officials said there were no injuries and the fire was extinguished quickly. Around 11 a.m., firefighters were working to remove existing ductwork to confirm the fire did not extend into the ceiling area.

City officials sent out an alert encouraging drivers to find alternate routes, as a portion of University Drive at Stratford Avenue near Fairfax Boulevard/Route 50 was shut down. Detours were re-routing northbound cars along Stratford Avenue to Chain Bridge Road/Route 123.
