UPDATE: Giant Employees Put Out Small Computer Room Fire

Potentially hazardous materials were involved in the incident.

UPDATED (1 a.m.):

Firefighters responded to a fire in the Giant shopping center at Fairfax Boulevard and Jermantown Road in Fairfax City around 9:30 Friday night.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units arrived to find a small fire in the store's back-up battery system in the computer room, according to Fairfax City Fire Chief Dave Rohr. By the time they got on-scene, Giant employees had put out most of the flames with a fire extinguisher. City firefighters followed up as per protocol.

The fire involved hazardous materials, lead acid battery packs in particular, according to fire radio communications. None of the safety personnel were exposed.

A Hazardous Materials Department unit, Fairfax County Health officials and fire marshal examined the fire's remains. They will decide when the store can reopen.
