Fairfax City Remembers Geraldine 'Gerry' Estep Sherwood

Sherwood was an avid supporter of the local arts. The community center was named for her husband, a former City Councilmember.

Geraldine “Gerry” Estep Sherwood, a longtime supporter of the arts in Fairfax, passed away Monday. 

City of Fairfax officials posted an obituary for Mrs. Sherwood on the city’s website. In it, they described her commitment to the arts community as a teacher at Fairfax High School and a leader in local arts organizations.

Mrs. Sherwood served with the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra, the Fairfax Music Guild and Fairfax Choral Society, and the Arts Council of Fairfax County, among other organizations.

The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center was named in honor of her husband, a former member of the City of Fairfax City Council who passed away in 2002. The center opened in 2011.

Mrs. Sherwood provided a $5 million gift for the construction of the community center. Before its opening, Mrs. Sherwood spoke with Patch in a 2010 article about the center.

"I gave it in memory of my husband who was very active in the city," Mrs. Sherwood told Patch. "I thought it was something that would be of value to the community that he would appreciate had he been alive."
