City Mourns Passing of Former Mayor Nathaniel Young

Nathaniel 'Nat' Young passed away Sept. 6. He previously served as both the mayor and a city councilmember in Fairfax City.

The City of Fairfax's flags will be hung at half-staff through this Friday at sunset in honor of former mayor and city councilman Nathaniel Young, who passed away on Sept. 6.

Young served as the mayor of the City of Fairfax from 1974 to 1978, and before that was a councilmember from 1966 to 1970 and from 1972 to 1974.

The City posted the following statement on its website Monday morning:

"Nathaniel F. 'Nat' Young, former city councilmember and mayor of the City of Fairfax, passed away Friday, Sept. 6. The city mourns his passing, and has lowered its flags to half-staff in his honor.

Mr. Young, born Aug. 11, 1921, in Norfolk, Va., moved to Fairfax in 1923 and graduated with the Class of 1939 from Fairfax High School. He spent two years at Virginia Military Institute, and then, in 1942, volunteered for the U.S. Army Corps. He served in England as a co-pilot on B-17s with the 8th Air Force; his crew completed 35 combat missions, including providing air support for the invasion of Normandy.

Upon separation from the service, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute before he returned to active duty in 1947 with the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 23 years.

Mr. Young married Sarah Burem Armstrong of Stony Point, Tenn., on Feb. 25, 1950.

He received his B.S. in meteorology from Florida State University in 1960 and, after retiring from the U.S. Air Force, taught physics and math at Northern Virginia Community College. 

He served three terms on the City Council from 1966-74, and then served as Mayor from 1974-78. Upon leaving public service, Mr. Young retired to Pensacola, Fla., and subsequently moved to Gulf Shores, Ala., where he remained active in politics.

Mr. Young is survived by his daughters Ann Noulis of Fairfax Station; Sarah McDaniel and Mary 'Cookie' Martin of Tallahassee, Fla.; and Peyton Reinhart of Woodbridge; along with seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one niece and three nephews. He is also survived by his loving companion of 13 years, Martha Hosey of Gulf Shores, Ala."
