Local Nonprofits Welcome New FCPS Superintendent

On July 8th, Northern Virginia Mediation Service (NVMS) organized a nonprofit partner reception to welcome the new Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Dr. Karen Garza.  The event provided a positive opportunity for the new Superintendent to meet some of the active, nonprofits engaged in our communities. Northern Virginia Family Services, Fairfax Partnership for Youth, Fairfax County Unified Prevention Coalition, The Alternative House and Fairfax County Council of PTAs co-sponsored the event with NVMS.

Each of these organizations collaborates with FCPS in addressing issues such as disadvantaged youth, risky behaviors, violence and restorative discipline in schools. After brief presentations from the organizations, Dr. Garza her expressed her interests in continuing to work with local non-profits that support Fairfax County youth, families and schools. Also in attendance were School Board Chairman Mr. Ilryong Moon and Assistant Superintendent for Special Services, Dr. Kim Dockery, who both shared their appreciation for the collaborative spirit and the work of local nonprofits to meet community needs. George Mason University’s School for Conflict Analysis & Resolution, College of Education and Human Development and Diversity Research & Action Center hosted the reception at the university.
