What the Romney Event Means for Thursday Traffic, School

What you need to know about this morning's Romney appearance.

at this morning. Here's what to expect if you plan on going or just passing through.
Traffic and parking:

  • Try to avoid driving near Van Dyck Park, especially Old Lee Highway, this morning. The event starts at 11 a.m. but people will be arriving early (think 7 a.m.) and may stay late (think 2:30 p.m.).
  • The northern part of Van Dyck Park will be closed off from Old Lee Highway to the tennis courts for the event. 
  • Expect high security. 
  • The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center and City of Fairfax Police Station will stay open. No one will be allowed to park at these buildings.
  • Want to go? There will be parking available on the street and in neighborhoods. Parking restrictions will be lifted. Click here for nearby parking options.

For those who want to go:

  • You can bring your camera to the event, but try to keep belongings to a minimum. Participants will have to go through security as they enter the park.
  • Participants can take a free shuttle from University Drive (across from Old Town Plaza) to Van Dyck Park.

For families and staff:

  • City officers will be on hand to make sure event participants don't try to use the school parking lot.
  • Kiss-N-Ride starts at 8:30 a.m. instead of 8:40 a.m. 
  • Walkers will still be able to cut through Van Dyck Park.
  • Parents may want to consider parking farther away for tonight's Back to School Night.
