UPDATED: Warwick Closed After Truck Snaps Utility Pole in Half

UPDATE (4:11 p.m.): A Maryland-registered box truck was making a right hand turn onto Warwick from Fairfax Boulevard at 1:45 p.m. when the driver hit the acceleration pedal instead of the brake, driving off the road and hitting a utility pole, according to Sgt. Joe Johnson, Fairfax City Police.

Psagaan Batnasan, 38, of Washington State, was charged with failure to maintain proper control of his vehicle. He was not injured.

The pole snapped completely in half. Dominion workers are on the scene to repair the poll. Police have blocked off Warwick Avenue at Burrows Avenue.

Fairfax Boulevard is now open in both directions.

Dominion expects the repairs to be complete in about six hours, said Le-Ha Anderson, Northern Virginia Public Information Officer for DOM.

There is no power outage associated with the accident as of yet, however DOM workers will have to temporarily cut power at some point to finish the repairs, said Johnson.

(3:34 p.m.): Warwick Avenue is now closed between Fairfax Boulevard and Burrows Avenue. Dominion Power estimate repairs to take up to 10 hours.

A downed utility pole at Fairfax Boulevard and Warwick Avenue could mean a traffic nightmare for rush-hour motorists.

The utility pole fell on the eastbound Fairfax Boulevard lanes. Motorists will be directed along a detour. 

Fairfax City urged drivers to take an alternative route in an emergency message sent to inboxes, cell phones and pagers at 2:52 p.m.

Dominion has yet to report any related power outages on its interactive map
