Tips to Deal With Grief Around the Holidays

As families and friends gather to celebrate the holidays, some are trying to find ways to cope with the loss of a loved one.

With the holiday season in full swing people will gather to celebrate and share happy moments.

For some the holiday season is compounded as they remember those family and friends who have died. For those dealing with grief during the holidays, , a Falls Church-based hospice provider and bereavement support organization, gave us these 10 ways to cope with grief during the holidays. The organization also provides free bereavement counseling for hospice families for up to 13-months.

Here are their methods of dealing with grief around the holidays:

1.       Make time to experience your grief and allow yourself to accept that the holidays may evoke sorrow as well as joy.

2.       Light a candle to pay tribute to your loved one who has died and say a prayer or share memories with others.

3.       Tell your friends and family members what you need during the holiday.

4.       Do not try to be perfect. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do this year.

5.       Consider changing some traditions. Things are different now and it’s okay to acknowledge that.

6.       Do not expect the spirit of the season to “heal” your emotional pain. Painful times are normal.

7.       Avoid excessive eating and use of alcohol. These tend to make grieving individuals feel worse.

8.       Maintain your physical well being by eating balanced meals, getting enough sleep and exercise.

9.       Plan something after the holidays so that you are prepared to handle the “post holiday” blues.

10.   Do not hesitate to consult a mental health consultant if your emotions are getting you down.
