Temperatures Could Reach 115-Degrees This Week

Heat and humidity could combine to create uncomfortable weather through Sunday.

Fairfax is in for some heat and humidity that could feel like 110 and 115 degrees later this week, said National Weather Service meteorologist Carrie Sussern.

Sussern said the hottest days will be between Thursday and Saturday. Temperatures will be in the high 90s, but with the humidity it could feel like it’s over 100 degrees, she said. Relief could be Sunday, she said, when possible storms will drop temperatures into the mid-90s.

“We have a high pressure system from the Midwest that’s slowly creeping into the East coast,” Sussern said. “The system is bringing high heat and humidity with it.”

Sussern said people with a history of heat stroke should stay inside to avoid the heat.

Amy Carlini, spokeswoman for Fairfax County Department of Family Services said she’s not aware if the county is setting up cooling centers for seniors or anyone else at this time. Carlini said the county offers cooling assistance to those who qualify.

Here are some tips to beat the heat from the American Red Cross:

  • Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids, but avoid drinks with alcohol and caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothing.
  • Stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors, and use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
  • Don’t leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.
