PVI Senior, St. Leo's Parishioner, FPYC Athlete Collapses During Rugby Game, Dies

A Paul VI Catholic High School senior and parishioner at St. Leo the Great died Thursday.

Michael Santiago, 17, was playing rugby Sunday for the Fairfax Police Youth Club Jaguars in Fredericksburg, according to parish and media reports. He sustained a head injury and collapsed during the game, according to a PVI statement. Michael was taken to Mary Washington Hospital, where he died days later.

"He was a month from his senior prom and less than two months from graduation," said PVI principal Virginia Colwell. "Michael was a good friend to many and will be greatly missed."

"But even in the midst of this tragedy, Michael's Catholic faith shines through. As disciples of Christ we are called to be like Him who suffered and died so that others may have life.  Michael is an organ donor and his parents honor their son by respecting his wishes.  Even in the tragedy of death, Michael will be giving the gift of life.  In giving of himself, others may live.  In honor of Michael's selfless gift, we invite you if you have not already done so, to consider becoming an organ donor.

PVI students and community members rallied around the tragedy, creating a 1,272 fan-strong Facebook page honoring Michael's life.

"Michael, I remember when i first went to St. leos and you were one of the first to make me laugh while i didnt know anyone," wrote Nahum Navarro. "You were always a great person to talk to and one of the chillest there will ever be."
