Local Veterans Day Events, Offices Closed

What you need to know for this year's Veterans Day in Fairfax.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Fairfax Station community will honor those who served in ceremonies around the county.

  • The VFW Post 8469 of Fairfax Station and the American Legion Post 177 will hold a Fairfax City service. The Ceremony of Rembrance begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Fairfax World Memorial in front of the Old Fairfax Courthouse at the corner of Main Street and Chain Bridge Road, according to the city's website. A U.S. Navy combat veteran will strike a vintage U.S. Navy bell for every name read from the Honor Roll of the Fallen.
  • Robinson Secondary School will hold a service in front of the school at about 1 p.m. The citation earned by Sgt. James W. Robinson, Jr., the school's namesake, will be read aloud. Robinson was the first Virginia resident to receive the Medal of Honor.
  • Fairview Elementary School students will red, white, and blue. A presentation about the military will also air on the school's morning show.

Services Outside of Fairfax Station

  • Arlington Cemetary - The annual Veteran's Day ceremony commences precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries. For more info, click here.
  • Mount Vernon - Veteran's Day Concert Featuring the USAF Strings at 3 p.m. Admission required for entry to Mt. Vernon, but no tickets needed for concert. Mount Vernon celebrates Veteran’s Day by admitting active duty, retired and former military personnel free-of-charge.
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial - 1 p.m. Color guard, speakers and a wreath-laying ceremony pay tribute to all who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War America's other conflicts. 
  • Vietnam Women's Memorial - 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.  Vietnam-era veterans and the children of veterans tell stories "in their own voices" about their experiences. There will also be stories featuring soldiers of the current struggles in Iraq and Afghanistan and other locations around the world. 
  • Navy Memorial - noon. The Naval District of Washington will lay a wreath at the Lone Sailor Statue in commemoration of Veterans Day. As part of the Memorial’s Authors on Deck book lecture series, authors Dwight Zimmerman and John Gresham will present Uncommon Valor: The Medal of Honor and The Six Warriors Who Earned it in Afghanistan and Iraq.
