Where to stay cool in Fairfax City.

Fairfax is under a heat advisory for Friday due to intensely high temperatures and high humidity expected to surround our area.

Residents can expect the temperatures to be in the high 90s with the heat index ranging between 105 and 110.

Here are some tips on how to stay cool:

  • If you don’t have air conditioning, try to stay on the lowest floor of a building and stay out of the sun.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated—a key component to keeping yourself cool.
  • Dress in light colored, lightweight clothes.
  • Try to spend the hottest part of the day in an air-conditioned location, such as your local library, movie theater or mall.

Want to camp out in one of Fairfax City's fine, air-conditioned establishments? Try these locations:

  • Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, cooling center from noon to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow. For information, call 703-385-7855.

  • Any of the restaurants or movie theatres in town. Granted, you'll probably have to fork over some money to stay.
