UPDATE: Tornado Watch, Thunderstorm Warning Wednesday Night in Fairfax

Sandbags are available at the City of Fairfax Property Yard.

UPDATE (7:45 p.m.): NWS issued a thunderstorm warning for Fairfax until 8:30 p.m. after detecting a line of severe thunderstorms moving northeast at 45 mph from Woodlawn. These storms can cause winds over 60 mph, NWS said.

(7:29 p.m.): NWS issued a tornado watch for Fairfax until 2 a.m. Jan. 31.

The National Weather Service warns that a line of heavy rain and thunderstorms this afternoon could mean flooding for Fairfax.

NWS issued a flash flood watch from 3 p.m. until late Wednesday night for Northern Virginia. The watch comes on the heels of a heavy rain prediction that could drop over one inch of rain on the area in a brief amount of time.

Fairfax City is offering a limited number of sandbags to city residents and businesses. There is a five per home/business restriction.

Residents and business owners can call 703-385-7980 to reserve sandbags. Pickup is available at the Property Yard (3410 Pickett Road) until 3 p.m.
