Fairfax Veteran Leaves $20 K Legacy for Operation Comfort Warriors

National Commander James E. Koutz visited Fairfax American Legion Post 177 this week to accept the donation.

The American Legion's top leader visited Fairfax Post 177 this week to accept a $20,000 donation to Operation Comfort Warriors, which provides supplies to wounded soldiers recovering in hospitals around the world.

American Legion Fairfax Post 177 hosted National Commander James E. Koutz on Monday to present the check, along with a proclamation from Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and City of Fairfax Mayor Scott Silverthorne.

The donation continues the legacy of Post 177 member Tom Hovis, who lost his battle with cancer in December 2012, according to an announcement from Post 177.

Hovis, Post 177's historian for many years, "was always doing something to honor and care for America’s Veterans," member Jeff White wrote on Patch.

"After his death, his wife Ann gave the post a gift of $10,000 to be used to benefit wounded warriors.  Post 177’s membership voted in a regular meeting to add $10,000 to that amount and donate it all to Operation Comfort Warriors," White wrote.
