Did Zoo Animals Know the Earthquake was Coming?

Workers at the Smithsonian National Zoo say yes.

Smithsonian zookeepers believe their charges knew something was amiss shortly before an earthquake startled people along the East Coast.

They noticed strange behavior coming from several of the animals. Seconds before the quake...

  • Some of the great apes started shrieking, gathered their young, left their food and climbed up a tree-like structure. 
  • A flock of 64 flamingos hurried into a group formation and huddled.
