UPDATE: Fatal Crash Blocks All Lanes on I-66W

Stay off I-66. And Stringfellow, West Ox, Rte. 50, Main Street. Anywhere in Fairfax City

UPDATE (8:04 a.m.): A crash on Interstate 66 killed a South Carolina man Monday afternoon.

Virginia State Police officials said that at about 4 p.m., a 1997 BMW sedan was traveling in the westbound lanes of Interstate 66 near Monument Drive when the driver of the car lost control of his vehicle.

The BMW ran off the side of the road, struck a guardrail, then crossed back into the westbound lanes and struck a 1999 Ford Explorer, authorities said.

The Ford Explorer spun out and overturned. The driver of the Explorer was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from his vehicle. He died at the scene.

The driver of the BMW was not injured in the crash.

Authorities have not yet released the name of the man killed in the crash.

Traffic on the roadway was bumper to bumper as officials investigated the accident. Alcohol has been ruled out as a factor. All lanes were reopened as of 8 p.m.

(7:03 p.m.): Cars on I-66 are moving again! A little. WTOP reports two left lanes are now open.

(6:32 p.m.): Stay away from Stringfellow, West Ox, Rte. 50 (anywhere), Main Street and most of Fairfax City if you can help it.

(5:45 p.m.): I-66 is expected to reopen around 6 p.m.

(4:36 p.m.): Two car crash resulted in one fatality.

Traffic is completely blocked on westbound Interstate 66 near Fairfax County Parkway after a serious crash that might take several hours to clean up.

Fairfax County Police urge drivers to stay away from I-66 and Route 50, where traffic is being diverted. Expect long delays.

Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.
