Fairfax High Cheer Wins Virginia 6A State Title

Fairfax High School Cheer won the 6A 2013 Virginia High School League cheer competition on Saturday, November 9th at Virginia Commonwealth University. The team beat out runner-up Cosby High School by only a half point. This is the second state championship for Fairfax High within the past four years, and the first state championship for all 27 members of the team.

Coach Wes Vaughan credits the team's focus and resiliency to their success. With only eight seniors, the team is one of the youngest in Fairfax High's previous cheer squads to compete.  Both male and female students make up the squad.

"This has been the most novice, skill-focused team I have ever coached in my 16 years," said Vaughan.  "Rarely did the team experience 'down time' at practices and competitions. Even with early season set-backs, the team worked together to push through the rough experiences in August and September."

After taking second place in the first round of the finals, the team took the lead to beat out three other teams in the state's largest division.

"The triple crown season finish is a perfect example that strength, focus and perseverance can help any team overcome adversity to achieve their goals," said Vaughan.

"We are so proud of the cheer squad at FHS," said Dr. Peter Noonan, Superintendent of the City of Fairfax Schools. "They have again proven that they are tops in the state. Coach Vaughan and the team have once more shown that Rebel spirit and achieved at the highest level in their sport. Congratulations!"
