Someone might get an early Christmas present Friday night if their ticket matches the numbers in the Mega Millions lottery drawing.

The Mega Millions lottery is estimated to hit $400 million before the 11 p.m. drawing Friday night, with Virginia residents purchasing 1.9 million tickets on Friday alone, lottery officials estimate. The cash value will be $216 million.

On March 30, 2012, Mega Millions made history with the world's largest prize in any jackpot game ever: $656 million. The jackpot was split three ways, by winning tickets in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland.

Northern Virginians have been lucky with the lottery recently.

Last year, Brian McCarthy of McLean won $107 million in the Virginia Lottery after buying a ticket in Herndon. He donated $25,000 each to two local charities during a press conference about his win.

In February, a Fredericksburg couple claimed the second-largest Virginia Lottery Prize ever.

In May, an Alexandria resident won a $2-million lottery prize.

In addition, people from Falls Church, Arlington and elsewhere have won $1 million in the past year. And in January, a winning lottery ticket was purchased in Burke.

Most grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores are Virginia Lottery retailers. In Fairfax, you can visit your local 7-11, Giant or Safeway, plus many more.

Visit the Virginia lottery website here and type in your zip code to find the place closest to you.

Tickets cost $1 each. The winning numbers will be posted on the Virginia Lottery site.
