The Kmart on Jermantown Road is nearing the end of its store closing sale.
After disappointing holiday sales, Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD) announced in January it would close up to 120 stores nationwide.
The Fairfax location was not on the original list of Kmart store closings the company released in January, but the Jermantown Road location started having "store closing" sales earlier this month.
A new Walmart opened close to Kmart in October 2011, and several local residents predicted the competition would not work out well for Kmart.
Each Kmart store closing employed between 40 and 80 people.
Sears Holdings Corporation has more than 4,000 retail stores in the United States and Canada. The company reports being the leading home appliance retailer.
Kmart also has locations in Springfield, Annandale, Chantilly and Herndon. There are also two Kmart stores in Prince William County.
