Cava Mezze Grill Opens in Mosaic District

Store offers Greek-inspired dishes with a new age twist.

Cava Mezze Grill opened its Merrifield location in the Mosaic District (2905 District Ave.) Wednesday.

Co-owner Brett Schulman said he and his business partners liked the explosion of local restaurants that are coming to the Mosaic District and they wanted to be a part of it. After founding the full-service Cava restaurant in Rockville, Md. in 2006, Schulman said the group decided to diversify the business and sell their dips and spreads in grocery stores and open smaller, fast service restaurants.

“The grill idea was to take some of what we do in the restaurant and what we sell in the stores and put them into a fast paced grill,” Schulman said. “You can get a restaurant quality meal that’s not too expensive.”

The grill features a menu derived from original Mediterranean dishes with a modern spin. The Merrifield location is the fifth of the stores with locations in Tysons Corner, Washington, DC and two locations in Bethesda and Capitol Heights, Md. The 2,300-square-foot Merrifield location will have a small outdoor seating area as well, Schulman said.

Dolcezza Gelato and Taylor Gourmet Deli opened in the Mosaic District earlier this year. The Mosaic District is a new development with nearly three dozen retailers already open or set to open later this spring.
