Is my child eligible to attend kindergarten this year?

In Virginia, children age 5 or older on or before September 30 may be enrolled in kindergarten for that school year.

Parents who do not want their children to attend kindergarten must notify the school in writing.

Children age 6 on or before September 30 must attend school, unless as stated above, parents do not want their child to, in which case they must notify the school in writing.

My child will enter school for the first time this year, or, we are new to the area - how do I register my child?

To enroll a new student, you must provide required documents, including the child’s birth certificate, a certificate indicating a recent physical examination from a doctor, the child's Social Security number, evidence of immunizations, and multiple documents providing residency.

Transfer students also need school records or transcripts from the school they previously attended.

Registration is typically done at the school site, at your assigned school. Call your child's school to ask about coming in to register your child, and what you should bring with you.

Details on all registration requirements can be found here on FCPS' website.
