Local Students Nominated for 'Cappies' Musical Theater Awards

The Cappies recognize D.C. Metro high school students' work in musical theater performance or critique.

 

Several Fairfax-area high school students are nominated for "Cappie Awards" for work in their school's musical theater program this year.

The Cappies, or Critics and Awards Program, recognizes high school theater productions and theater critic writing at schools across the D.C. Metro area.

The winners will be announced at the 14th annual Cappies Gala at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts this Sunday. 

The Cappies (Critics and Awards Program) includes students from high schools in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. Co-founder and Capitol Steps co-founder, Bill Strauss, used to call them “part Tonys, part Final Four.”

Casts of nominated shows and the performers of nominated songs will present musical numbers as well as sketches from the nominated plays at the awards show.

Throughout the year, the Cappies program is driven by over 380 area high school theater student critics who attend each others’ shows, write reviews for newspapers and TV, and serve as “Cappies” awards judges.

  • Comic Actor in a Musical: Derek Yost, Fairfax High School, for Hello Dolly!
  • Stage Crew: Alex Wingate, Evelyn Lockwood, Sawyer Loessberg, and Zach Tauscher, Paul VI High School, for Once Upon a Mattress
  • Male Vocalist: Jacob Rozmajzl, Paul VI High School, for Once Upon a Mattress
  • Supporting Actor in a Musical: Brendan McAlevy, Paul VI High School, for Once Upon a Mattress
  • Lead Actress in a Musical: Abigail Rozmajzl, Paul VI High School, for Once Upon a Mattress
  • Ensemble in a Musical: "Teen Chorus," Woodson High School, for Bye, Bye, Birdie
  • Comic Actress in a Musical: Faith Johnson, Woodson High School, for Bye, Bye, Birdie
  • Marketing & Publicity: Sarah Irving, Sean Cooper and Brennan Laskas, Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
  • Ensemble in a Musical: "Council Kids," Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
  • Male Dancer: Ivonte Milligan, Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
  • Male Vocalist: Michael Lamar, Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
  • Comic Actor in a Musical: Spencer Boyd, Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
  • Supporting Actress in a Musical: Katie Rogers, Robinson Secondary School, for Hairspray
