Loads of National Night Out Parties to Be Held in Fairfax City Tuesday

Are you planning a block party? Tell us about it!

City of Fairfax Police say, loads of calls and e-mails have been coming in from residents who say they plan to hold a block party or other kind of neighborhood gathering for National Night Out this coming Tuesday night, Aug. 6.

Both City of Fairfax Police and elected officials like Mayor Scott Silverthorne say, National Night Out is not only a fun night where locals can kick back, relax and have a great time getting to know their neighbors, but it's also a great chance for residents to get to know their local police force and elected officials.

City of Fairfax police officers typically visit a long list of local parties, making sure everyone is being safe and also taking the time to introduce themselves to residents, and help educate them about how residents and the department can work together to protect local neighborhoods from crime.

Officers come armed with information about Neighborhood Watch programs the department offers, and other such programs that get officers and residents working together to combat crime.

Mayor Silverthorne said, he not only loves to join in the parties, but he and the members of the City Council love the opportunity to get out there and talk to locals about the goings-on of the city.

"I've taken part in nearly every National Night Out since the very first year I joined the City Council," Silverthorne said. "It's really a good way to get out in the community and really promote stronger ties between the City and the police and our communities."

Silverthorne added, he's always surprised to see how much the event grows in size each year.

"Every year, over time, these events get bigger and bigger," he said. "It's gone up steadily over the years."

Joining police officers out at the parties will be another familiar special guest - McGruff the crime-fighting dog.
