Large Water Main Break Downtown Snarls Wednesday Evening Rush Hour

Drivers were re-routed.

Traffic was rather messy Wednesday evening as crews rushed to repair a large water main break in downtown Fairfax City.

The break was located on North Street at the intersection of Chain Bridge Road, near the Auld Shebeen Irish pub and restaurant.

Repairs began at 4:30 p.m., and City representatives said it could likely take around five hours.

One lane of traffic in either direction was open at 4:30 p.m., but both eastbound lanes shut down at 6:30 p.m. to complete repairs. Traffic was re-routed down Main Street/Route 236.
