Dear Senator Petersen: Fairfax Villa's Roads 'Are An Embarassment'

A resident of the Fairfax Villa neighborhood writes an open letter to Senator Chap Petersen of Fairfax about poor road conditions.

Editor's Note: This is an open letter to State Senator Chap Petersen (34th District/Fairfax) by a local resident, submitted to Patch by the resident. Patch has also sent a copy of the letter to Senator Petersen's office, and invited him to publish a response if he chooses.

"Good morning Mr. Petersen,

Per your request, I’m sending you a reminder about our conversation, this year and last year, about the condition of the streets here in the Villa neighborhood.

My husband has lived in this neighborhood for 20+ years. I moved here in 1996. He claims that this neighborhood has not been paved once since he moved in here.

I know, for certain, that it hasn't been paved since I’ve been here. There have been repairs to the curbs, and to a few of the rare sidewalks, but that’s it.

In the past two years, county workers have marked the streets with paint and have dug up the road repairing pipes and such, and leaving a mess in their wake.  I don’t think they’re done, but nobody’s doing work here anymore.

These streets are an embarrassment!  We are now dealing with large cracks which produce tall grasses/weeds throughout the neighborhood.  There are potholes that have been repeatedly refilled for over a dozen years, where loose gravel is scattered generously as far as the eye can see.

With only a couple of sidewalks in the area, these streets are not just used to drive on, they’re also used to walk our dogs, get our exercise, and to teach our kids to ride bikes and roller-skate.

Last summer, a woman up the street slipped on the gravel and broke her arm.  She should’ve sued the county for gross negligence.

I now wish I’d taken pictures this July when I saw an elderly woman up the street who was out at 6:30 a.m. for three days running (to beat the heat, I imagine) on her knees weeding the street in front of her house.

That was sad, and I told her so. She said that her complaints have been ignored. I believe her, because mine have too.

After recently being screwed by the school board with regard to the boundary change - where, in every proposed plan, our neighborhood was being bused to Frost/Woodson, surgically removing us from our community and dumping us off to a distant part of the county, away from all of the friends our children grew up with - and, after having our complaints about these abysmal streets repeatedly ignored, we, here in the Villa, have had enough!!!

PLEASE FIX OUR STREETS!!!

Frustrated in the Villa,

Genny Fontaine

San Carlos Drive, Fairfax (County)
