Washington West Film Festival Comes to Fairfax, Republican Candidate for Sheriff Donates Check to Fairfax City Shelter, and More

Our daily briefs, bringing you local Fairfax news and events at a glance.

Bryan Wolfe, the GOP’s nominee for Fairfax County Sheriff, presented a $1,000 donation check to the Lamb Shelter for the Homeless this past weekend. “During his 26 years with the Fairfax City Police, Bryan regularly responded to calls from this facility,” said Gerry Gunn, Wolfe’s campaign manager. “The Lamb Center offers help to the so–called ‘hard-core homeless’ who don’t qualify for shelters and don’t receive much in the way of services. These people aren’t criminals. In many instances they are mentally ill and as a result are constantly recycled through the jail for petty crimes. One of Bryan’s goals as Sheriff would be to place more emphasis on mental health services in an effort to address this type of situation.” The Lamb Center offers services such as hot meals, showers, job search help and more. Tickets are now on sale for the Washington West Film Festival, to take place at the Reston Bow Tie Cinema in Reston and the Angelika Film Center in the Merrifield area of Fairfax. Started by local leader and film aficionado Brad Russell, the festival aspires to grow the D.C. region as a world class film hub, helping to draw great film premieres, provide programs to develop artists and technicians in the film industry, and use storytelling as a powerful engine for change and charity. Last year, Tom Hanks and Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared; this year, Louis-Dreyfus and Ed Asner are already committed. Tickets range from $12-25 with discounts available for students and seniors. For more information and a list of this year’s films, click here.
