Registration for Fairfax Bike Summit Now Open, Unique New Fitness Business to Open Next Week, and More

Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling, in partnership with George Mason University, Fairfax County, and the City of Fairfax, will host the 2013 Fairfax Bike Summit at GMU on Saturday, Nov. 2. and registration has begun. All are welcome. Topics of discussion will largely focus on “the need to make all future transit-oriented, mixed-use developments in [the Fairfax area] bike-friendly, especially since future development in the county will be primarily concentrated around transit,” the website says. Fairfax County invites all to observe a moment of silence this Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8:46 a.m. EST, to observe the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of 2001. They encourage all to display flags at half-staff as well. County residents and visitors are also invited to consider Memorial Grove, located on the Government Center grounds at 12000 Government Center Parkway in Fairfax, as “a space where you may want to take a moment and reflect,” the County said. People can also visit USA.gov to learn more about memorials in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Penn. The County also invited all to “take steps during National Preparedness Month to build — or re-supply — your emergency supply kitmake a plan for your family and business, and commit to stay informed.”

Congratulations to Woodson High! The school’s yearbook, the Cavalier, has earned an “All-American” rating with four marks of distinction from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA).  The All-American rating is the highest rating given to any publication in NSPA’s critique service. Staff members received high praise for their work from a judge who noted that the staff “took a chance by being non-traditional.”

For women looking for a fun new form of exercise – especially if you like to dance – Fairfax will soon be home to a new ballet-themed fitness business, Pure Barre, just outside the city limits at 4201 Ridge Top Road in Fairfax. Says owner Brooke Sides, Pure Barre is a 55-minute workout that is designed to tone your muscles and burn fat. “The class is set to motivating music and promises to change your muscles in 10 classes,” she describes. Pure Barre in Fairfax is the first studio of its kind in Northern Virginia, and is set to open on next Friday, Sept. 20. For more information, click here.
