New Stores Opening Around Fairfax, Fill the Boot, 'Char-a-oke' Tonight, and More

Pop by the grand opening of a new store in greater Fairfax tomorrow – Alex and Ani, at 2905 District Ave., suite 145. Alex and Ani is a jewelry store that offers “eco-friendly, positive-energy products that adorn the body, enlighten the mind and empower the spirit,” the company said in a news release. All of the products are designed by Carolyn Rafaelian and made in America. The grand opening reception will take place Thursday from 6-8 p.m. The first 20 attendees will receive a gift certificate for a free product, and light refreshments will be served. Speaking of new stores in Fairfax, there are also a few newbies at Fairfax Corner. Earlier this summer, the shopping center welcomed Potomac River Running store, and celebrated the grand reopening of the Ann Taylor LOFT store. Next month, the shopping center just announced two new stores will open - BlueMercury, a luxury beauty and spa retail store; and Mathnasium, a math tutoring business. Do you love karaoke? How about “char-a-oke?” This Thursday, Aug. 29 is Fairfax County Public Schools’ third annual charitable karaoke fundraiser, known as “Char-a-oke.” Locals are invited to build employee engagement by putting together a team to belt out your favorite karaoke song, or attend as a guest for great networking and delicious catering from Ruth’s Chris Steak House. Proceeds benefit the Education Foundation for Fairfax County Public Schools. Entrants compete for trophies like Best Vocals, Best Rendition, Crowd Favorite and Most Spirited. Raffle tickets are also available for $20 each, and can win you a five-night stay at any Hilton hotel worldwide. Tickets range from $75 for a single spectator to $1,000 for a team package with extra perks. It all takes place at the Barns at Wolf Trap in Vienna. Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th District) will join Fairfax County firefighters and paramedics Wednesday when they kick off this year’s Fill-the-Boot campaign to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) mission to fight 40 neuromuscular diseases. Fairfax firefighters raised more than a half-million dollars last year for the cause through their Fill-the-Boot campaign over Labor Day weekend. Look for the firefighters out near Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Station #13, at 9501 Old Burke Lake Road in Burke, beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
