President Barack Obama seemed to strike all the right notes Friday at Washington-Lee High School when he delivered a speech designed to put pressure on Congress to keep student loan interest rates down.
The president spoke before an enthusiastic crowd of more than 1,000 junior and senior high school students, parents, faculty and local elected officials. Nearly 94 percent of Washington-Lee students go on to some sort of higher education upon graduation.
Obama spoke briefly about the economy in general before specifically talking about college affordability.
On July 1, a student loan interest rate cut will expire — effectively doubling rates overnight — unless Congress acts, Obama said.
He was answered with resounding "boos."
"That's like a $1,000 tax hike for more than 7 million students around the country," Obama said. "You guys shouldn't have to pay an extra $1,000 because Congress can't get its act together."
House Republicans will only prevent rates from doubling if they can cut things like preventative health care for women, the president said, earning a second round of "boos." The country shouldn't have to choose between the two, the president said, this time answered with cheering.
The president had to pause multiple times for applause or, in some cases, laughter, as he made the case that keeping higher education affordable was directly tied to rebuilding the economy.
Obama told his own story of struggling with student loan debt, and said he and the first lady just finished paying off their student loans about eight years ago. The two entered the world of work with a "truckload" of student debt, loans they were still paying off when they were starting to save up for their children's education.
"We got married. And together we got poor," he said.
But, he added, the couple was only able to get where they are today thanks to scholarships and student loans.
"This country gave us a chance at a good education. This country has always made the commitment to put a good education within the reach of everybody who is willing to work for it. That's the kind of investment in our own people that helps us lead the world," he said.
Americans now owe more on student loans than they do on credit cards, he said.
"I don't want you to start off life saddled with debt," the president said to raucous applause. "Because if you start off that way, it means a lot of really tough choices — like waiting longer to buy a house or start a family."
The president called on students to send a message to Congress: "Tell them, 'Don't double my rates.' "
Obama told the young men and women to call, email, post on Facebook and tweet using the hashtag #dontdoublemyrate to get the message across.
"I want you guys to realize that your voice makes a difference. Your voice matters," he said. "I know sometimes it seems like it doesn't. But members of Congress — they listen. And if they start hearing from a lot of folks, sometimes it changes their mind. Sometimes it changes their vote."
Though billed by the White House as official business, the president seemed to connect with his audience in a way that was reminiscent of his 2008 campaign. Obama will formally kick off his reelection bid this weekend with events in Richmond and Columbus, Ohio.
He played to the young crowd well, getting a thunderous reaction when he recognized the graduating class, next year's rising seniors and the upcoming prom. He gave them a stern look when a low rumble greeted his remarks about upcoming final exams, or on the importance of studying math and science.
"You're solid on math," Obama asked one student who grumbled. "OK, that's good."
The president was introduced by Amirah Delwin, one of three students Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan met with privately before his speech.
Each student was allowed to bring one parent.
"It's very exciting for our students to listen to our nation's leader," said Julie Crawford, assistant superintendent for student services. "It's a timely topic, certainly."

I read the transcript. A far better speech would have been to outline for the kids the work, saving and investing habits of the super successful. Pick a few rags to riches examples and hold them up as heroes. He noted he saw a lot of cell phones and other stuff in the audience. How about a quick calculation of how much money they are poring down the drain while waiting for someone to 'give' them an education. How disengenuous to equate an increased interest rate to a tax increase. Hopefully one of the social studies teachers at W

mr obama has done nothing for syria, darfur or the cartels in mexico, has wasted 5 trillion dollars, and blames congress for protecting the us currency itself....college kids today can blame the cost of education on college professors and beuracracy, the idiot state governments...and banks who ruin money everyday....the people with wealth and power have let the future generations down for the last 30 years...dont listen to them and dont waste your vote on them...if you dont understand as a citizen it is you responsibility to get it right, not fall for ignorant selfish retoric that has filled children and ignorant parents for generations...mr obama is a problem, and he caters to ignorant emotional persons whos vote has brought this country to where it is now.

Hey Michael, as a full-time Professor for the last 6 years I have been paid 42K a year and as an adjunct about half of that. A full time position takes about 60 hours a week. Tenure track position are very rare to come by these days. Yes, students pay very high tuition rates. With Professors making what I just described here, on yearly contracts in which we can be fired "at will" for no particular reason I will let you do the math and who is profiting from those tuition rates.

Increasing educations costs are another challenge no politician will be able to resolve. But anything thing that increases the financial burden of higher education comes at the great cost of a lesser educated country. The president's determined position on this issue is needed to support the education that is so important to the future of the country.

Considering Mr. Obama attended Reverend Wright's Church for a long time and did not realize Rev Wright hated white people - I tend to think the President does not believe in God. As far as his honor - the lies President Obama tells shows he really does not care - well he does like the fact First Lady has taken more vacations than any other President and well the President has done more campaigning than the previous few Presidents combined....

So Senator Obama did not vote for the Student Loan as he too busy running for President. I believe House of Reps did pass a bill to keep student loan interest rates low and the accounted for the change in revenue - I believe the Senate has not taken up the bill yet and the President has threatened to VETO because it is not written how he likes it ...
As much as I think President Obama is destroying America with his socialist polices - I think the biggest threat to the US is the press' lack of being objective. President Obama or Vice President Biden can say anything and they are never challenged or shown in error. Like this story fails to mention Reps did pass a bill; GM is NOT the largest company and they have not paid their TARP bailout funds back - nor does any of the liberal press seem to be willing to challenge the President on his unemployment numbers. One factor in the decrease in unemployment is the number of people who stopped looking for a job.

The best thing about this speech is that he is telling kids to participate in their government and know that the difference between struggling and success is strength. It is also important that he stressed the importance of reviving America's dead majors because we do suck at these fields in comparison to those who don't have even a fifth of what is available over here. Mostly, he emphasizes the need to stop any hindrance to threatens success.

Repubs work very hard to give tax breaks to multi-millionaires and billionaires... which is awesome in my opinion. But, they work just as much to deny or deprive any struggling and middle-class families any break. Who exactly are the Repub lawmakers working for? Perhaps the question should be who they are working against.

I can't believe the garbage I am reading here. Do a little research people, Obama is one of the worst presidents we have had in a long time and that's saying a lot with two Bush's in recent history. His entire platform is even though my policies have done nothing to improve the economy and the countries situation please give me four more years, I swear it will work next time. That's not even mentioning the shredding of the constitution that you hypocritical liberals were jumping all over Bush for. The Obama administration has signed in laws that completely trump the patriot act in destruction of your civil liberties. The worst part is he ran on the platform of upholding the constitution and was very critical of the patriot act prior to being elected. He is a liar, a shill for the international banks and he is leading our country to fascism at an ever increasing pace.

Agree with scy. Obama lets the Tea Party creeps push him farther and farther to the right. All he wants to do is be re-elected so he can run his mouth for 4 more years and hold events featuring the military and law enforcement, the only people who he apparently relates to, when he's not vacationing somewhere.

Did the students receive academic credit for attending this assembly? Did it count as education time? Did they learn to cut through rhetoric, to investigate claims of truth, to recognize bias when they see it?
Could be a real learning experience -- but I'd bet my next paycheck it wasn't.

The Dems have developed a foolproof strategy. They attach huge pork to all their bills, come up with harmful ways to pay for it, and give each one some outrageously patriotic name that sounds fantastic. That means that Republicans can't vote for it and the Dems can say, "Look, they wouldn't vote for the Save America Now Act," or whatever they've called it.
This bill includes 2plus billion for minority colleges, and other pork and pays for the lost income and new pork by imposing huge new taxes on certain businesses. Compare this to the Lilly Ledbetter "Fair Pay" Act with all it's pork when all that was needed was to change the statute of limitations of a previous act.
They purposely drafted this new bill to play their political game instead of drafting one that all could agree upon. I hope the public is informed enough to recognize the games they're playing.
