University Mall Set for $25 Million Upgrade

Construction begins in June.

University Mall will undergo a $25 million renovation starting this summer. “Right now, people go right by University Mall without giving a second glance, but this will make people stop,” said Rick Wolff, president and CEO of George H. Rucker Realty Corporation, which owns the mall. The mall at the corner of Braddock Road and Route 123 was built in the late 1970s. The renovations, which would be completed by the fall of 2013, would bring the shopping center from 125,000 square feet to about 200,000 square feet. Current tenants, including Giant, Cardinal Bank, and the University Mall Theatre, will remain open throughout construction. Giant will expand their store, while Cardinal bank will move to a new building on property. “We are still …

Dominion Customers May See Cheaper Bill This Fall

Monthly electric charges could drop to an average of $105 per household by September.

Gas prices may be going up and up, but cost of electricity, at least for Dominion customers, is dropping. The average household electricity bill is expected to drop to $105.90 in September, the company says, a 5.7 percent decrease from January 2012. The calculation is based on the an average use of 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The drop is owed largely to a decrease in Dominion's fuel rate. The proposed fuel rate is 2.706 cents per kilowatt-hour – a decrease of approximately 18 percent from the current fuel rate of 3.289 cents per kilowatt-hour, said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. The adjustment is the lowest the company has proposed since 2007, Anderson said. It will result in an annual fuel revenue reduction of $388 million. In a company …

Kaine Lays Out Economic Agenda With Business Leaders

The former governor and U.S. Senate candidate toured Courthouse-based OPower and called that company's story "inspirational."

A little over five years ago, Dan Yates and Alex Laskey were trying to figure out where they should start their business — OPower, a local effort that would work with utility companies to help their customers conserve energy and save money. “Consistently, going from person to person, we got feedback that Virginia was a great place to start a business,” Yates told a small crowd of Northern Virginia business leaders Wednesday. “That’s an applause line,” U.S. Senate candidate and former Gov. Tim Kaine interjected. The crowd chuckled and complied. Kaine and U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., toured OPower before meeting with more than 30 area business leaders last week. It was the first day of Kaine’s two-week tour of Virginia in which he’s laying …

Survey: Fairfax County Healthiest in Virginia

Socio-economic factors play big role in health of population, health ranking report shows.

For the third year in a row, Fairfax County outranked all of Virginia's other cities and counties as the healthiest in the state, according to a new survey being released Tuesday. Northern Virginia fared well in the study, with Arlington coming in second and Loudoun County coming in third.  Socio-economic factors accounted for 40 percent of Fairfax County's top spot, said Julie Willems Van Dijk, associate scientist at the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute, who is part of the survey team. The 2012 County HealthRankings, produced by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, ranks the health of counties in all 50 states according to how healthy people are and how long …

Best Buy to Close 50 U.S. Stores

Store closures will result in layoffs for 400 U.S. Best Buy employees.

Best Buy officials announced Thursday the electronics retailer will close 50 of its U.S. stores and lay off 400 employees at corporate and support levels.  On the flip side, the company aims to open 50 stores in China in fiscal year 2013. Northern Virginia has 10 Best Buy stores, including stores in the Fair City Mall shopping center in Fairfax City and at Fair Lakes. Specific stores targeted for closure have not been announced. The news comes after the Richfield, Minn.-based company released its fiscal year fourth-quarter earnings, showing a $1.7 billion loss.  The news of closures and downed profits are not a surprise to many.  Best Buy reported shortfalls after its third quarter, and a January 2012 Forbes article suggested the company …
