Nonprofits in Virginia looking good

Just how does Virginia’s nonprofit sector rate? According to a study at Johns Hopkins University, nonprofits are helping shape the economic, cultural and social landscape.  It is the third largest employer among Virginia’s industries with 235,000 paid workers and 130,000 full time equivalent volunteers.

Virginia’s nonprofits raise $313 million in income tax revenues for the state.  In Virginia 6.6% of total employment is nonprofit, compared with 8.4% nationally, but if it were not for the northern part of the state near Washington DC, it would be much less.

Virginia’s nonprofits range from social services, healthcare, and education to civic life and the arts, serving both individuals and communities, but most economic  resources and resources are concentrated in healthcare.  Just a third of nonprofit income comes from gifts and grants – the rest from government and fees.

Average weekly wages of nonprofit workers are lower than for-profit, but in fields where both are involved, nonprofit workers earn more.  Report and more information available here
