Woodson Loses Tough Game to South County

Defensive struggles lead to a disappointing loss for the Cavaliers

The Woodson girls were unable to stop South County’s dominant center, Simone Antwi, as she went for 21 points and 10 rebounds, in a 56-37 loss to the Stallions.

The Cavaliers looked great on both sides of the ball early in the first quarter on Friday night. The communication on defense was excellent, and the shooting was on target. Senior Keara Finnerty made  three consecutive 3-pointers for Woodson, as the Cavs trailed by only three points at the end of the first quarter, 14-11.

Then South County’s center Antwi took over. She owned the paint, scoring 14 points and grabbing five boards in the second quarter alone. Guarding Antwi was no easy task for the much shorter Woodson lineup. The height advantage favored South County, and Woodson was not able to stop Antwi in the second quarter. Entering halftime the Stallions lead 32-18.

After a halftime adjustment by Coach Pat Neri, Woodson was prepared to double-team Antwi when she received the ball in the paint. The Cavaliers were able to cut the lead down to just 10 points, until the Stallion guards began to heat up from behind the arc. South County hit four straight 3-pointers and began to run away with the game.

With 6:17 remaining in the fourth, Woodson senior Taylor Hayes fell to the ground after battling for a rebound down low. The game was stopped as Neri and the South County trainer offered assistance to the injured guard. Fortunately, Hayes was able to make it off the court with some help and received treatment on the sideline.

Woodson would eventually lose the game 56-37, dropping its record to 6-5 on the season. Finnerty led the Cavaliers with 13 points, and Bryce Debolt added 10 points and eight rebounds. Junior Amy Sitts played great defensively for Woodson, as she blocked four shots in the game.

The Cavaliers net game is Monday at Annandale at 7:30 p.m.
