Woodson Baseball Looks to 'Play Their Hearts Out' Against District Champs
Senior right hander Bryson Hough was selected as the 2011 Patriot District Pitcher of the Year.
W.T. Woodson High School's varsity baseball team finished their regular season with a 16-4 record before suffering a tough 7-3 loss to the Lake Braddock Bruins in the second round of the Patriot District tournament.
The Bruins were a tough opponent for the Cavaliers this year as they swept the regular season series and made it 3-0 against Woodson.
Though the team met a quick end in the district tournament, individual players made first and second All Patriot District teams. Senior captain Bryson Hough was selected as the Patriot District Pitcher of the Year.
“Bryson has had a very solid year for us,” said Woodson head coach Chris Warren. “He pitched a lot of big games and really came through when we needed him to, his statistics were outstanding for the year.”
The right hander will pitch for Bucknell University in the fall.
Senior infielders John McGillicuddy and Matt Powell and outfielder David Rozner were all chosen for first team All Patriot District.
“John had a very good year for us, he's in the three hole for us all year and was one of the team leaders in batting average and RBIs,” said Warren. “He also won four games at the mound for us, he had one of the largest roles in our success this season.”
Seniors Ryan Fitzgerald and Joe McGillicuddy were selected for the All Patriot District second team and Tyler Wislocki, Mitch Prosperi Joey Coogan and Joe Brendler were all named as honorable mentions for the Cavaliers this season.
The Cavaliers will travel to Ashburn to face regular season Liberty District champion Stone Bridge High School at 4 p.m. on Friday.
“Liberty is a tough district and it’s a home game for them so I know they are going to come out and have one of their best games of the year,” said Warren. “We just have to come out with the right mindset and play our hearts out like we have been all year.”
