Townhouse Fire Injured Firefighter, Displaced Family, Cost $180K

No one was home when the fire started.

Thursday's townhouse fire in the Fairview neighborhood cost a family its home and $180,000 in damages, and injured a firefighter.

At around 1:30 p.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue were called to the 5400 block of Cheshire Meadows Way in Fairfax, and found the front and back of a townhouse engulfed in flames. Firefighters had the fire under control in about 15 minutes. The fire did not spread to connected townhouses.

A Fairfax County firefighter suffered a non-life threatening burn and was sent to the Washington Hospital Burn Center.

Red Cross offered to support the three adults and child who lived in the townhouse, though the help was declined, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

The fire started in the townhouse's basement. Cause is still being determined.
