Lady Cavs Conclude Red Jenkins Classic with Big Win
Keara Finnerty shines again
After a spectacular 24-point performance on Thursday, W.T. Woodson High School's Keara Finnerty picked up right where she left off, draining five three-pointers and going 5-5 from the free throw line en route to a game-high 22 points. The junior sharpshooter hit her first three shots from behind the arc to give the Lady Cavs a 9-0 lead on Saturday. Woodson never looked back, cruising to the 50-26 win.
While Finnerty may have captured the majority of the game’s highlights, it was the disciplined team defense of the Cavaliers that proved to be the difference. The aggressive 2-3 zone created a slew of turnovers, while holding West Potomac scoreless the first six minutes of the game, allowing Woodson to break out an 11-point lead they never relinquished.
West Potomac finally got going in the second quarter. They began trading baskets with Woodson, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Hayes gave the Lady Cavs a comfortable 24-13 halftime lead.
Hayes hit another three between a pair of Finnerty triples to start the third quarter, but the hot streak soon turned to a drought as the Lady Cavs went scoreless the rest of the period.
With Woodson faltering, West Potomac began to chip away at at the lead, pulling to within 10 early in the fourth. Finnerty finally sparked the Lady Cavs with a basket and a foul, and her team responded. A 17-point outburst in the final six minutes allowed Woodson to run away with the victory and remain unbeaten.
They will look to continue their winning ways against Wakefield on Tuesday night.
