Officials are still cleaning up the wreckage this morning after a tractor-trailer burst into flames overnight, closing the northbound lanes of I-95 near the Lorton exit.

The Virginia State Police reported that the crash occurred at about 2 a.m., when a northbound tractor-trailer came upon a VDOT work zone. The tractor-trailer rear ended one of the work zone’s “cushion trucks.” The impact ruptured one of the tractor-trailer’s fuel tanks and caused an explosion.

The driver of the tractor-trailer died at the scene. His body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Manassas, authorities said.

No one was in the cushion truck at the time of the crash.

Crews were having problems extinguishing hot spots on the tractor-trailer earlier this morning, officials said. Northbound lanes on I-95 were  closed as of 8 a.m. HOV lanes were open and restrictions on those lanes were lifted to alleviate delays, authorities said. Northbound traffic was detoured to Route 1.
