Cavs Steal Patriot District Title From Top-Seeded Bruins

Woodson’s girls lacrosse team captured the Patriot District title last Friday night with a 14 – 11 win over the top seeded Lake Braddock Bruins. 

This district championship is the third consecutive earned by the Cavs since joining the Patriot District in the 2009/2010 school year. The win propels Woodson into the Northern Region tournament, which begins Tuesday night for the Cavs when they host the Falls Church Jaguars at Woodson’s Pat Cunningham Stadium. 

The championship contest started well for Woodson, as they jumped out to an early 5 – 0 lead over the Bruins. The large lead dissipated quickly, however, as the Bruins chipped away at the deficit to close within a goal at halftime.  Fortunately for Cavaliers fans that was as close as Lake Braddock would get.  In the second half Woodson weathered the Bruins’ storm and they eventually pulled away late in the game for the 14 – 11 win.  

Woodson was led on offense by senior midfielder Grace Finnerty, who scored three early goals to spark the Cavs. Woodson’s offense also featured strong play from senior captains Leah Williamson and Elena Obregon, juniors DeeDee Montgomery and Laura Dunn, sophomore Kelly Stegner, and freshmen Jasmine Kim and Isabel Obregon.

On defense, Woodson received stellar performances from senior captain goalie Victoria Vinall and a host of other Cavs, including seniors Ali Kiviat and Morgan Willard, and junior Katie Hayes.

The Bruins were led by the all-around strong play and scoring of Taylor Livick, Kristen Gaudian, and Grace Youn. Defensively, Lake Braddock was led by goalie Alyssa Harrison, Shannon Klein, and Sarah Price.
