FACETS Raises Money for Needy With Taste of Fall

FACETS Raises Money for the Homeless

Over 200 guests sampled some of Fairfax City’s best restaurants Saturday night. From shepherd’s pie to baba ghannouge, there was something that could satisfy anyone’s palette.

The event, A Taste of Fall, was organized by FACETS, a nonprofit organization that strives to help the local homeless community. FACETS supports the future of poverty-stricken residents by providing education and career counseling programs. They also assist in providing food and permanent housing.

A total of 12 local restaurants, including a brewery and two wineries, provided samples for ticket-paying guests. For the first time, the event was held in Fairfax City at the Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center located off Old Lee Highway.

The night included live music, raffle prizes, games and a live auction, which raised $15,000. Volunteers are still counting the total raised in the event's silent auction. All proceeds will be used to help neighbors in need.

Nicole Simmons, who was once homeless with her husband and six children, shared her struggles, as she spoke to possible bidders.

“FACETS has been a lifesaver,” she said.  “I don’t know what I would have done without them.” FACETS helped Simmons and her family get out of poverty, by providing food and assisting them with securing permanent housing.

The event was not just a celebration of local eateries, but also a celebration of the community, according to Amanda Andere, executive director of FACETS.

“It’s a time to put on our nice clothes and celebrate the fact that the community does come together 365 days a year by supporting people in need," she said.
