Adam Lister Gallery Finds New Home Nearby

The local artist has moved his art gallery, but not far.

Local artist Adam Lister is in the process of relocating his gallery. Luckily, he isn't moving far.

The Adam Lister Gallery was located on University Drive in the heart of Fairfax City. It has now moved…downstairs.

"[Before] we had a temporary situation and we were able to use that space while it was un-leased for a few months," said Lister. "A few months turned into almost two years."

The gallery was using an un-leased space that the landlords allowed Lister to use as part of a sponsorship deal. Now that they were able to lease the space, they offered him a space downstairs in the same building.

"The landlords were great," explained Lister. "They wanted to keep the gallery in the development here and this was another empty space that is un-leased so we were able to work something out."

The City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts is a supporter of local artists such as Lister, and helped to work out the sponsorship deal.

The gallery isn't open to the public just yet, as a lot of work still needs to be done to return to form.

"We just started moving two weeks ago," said Lister. "We still have stuff that needs to be unboxed, put away and people need to pick their [art] up."

A portion of the Adam Lister gallery is work lent to the gallery by other artists for display and/or sale. Due to the downgrade in size, some of this artwork will be returned to their owners until the gallery is up and running in a more organized fashion.

"The plan now is to figure out how to lay this place out," Lister explained. "Then we can start doing our shows."

The first show in the new gallery is tentatively planned to take place in late September or early October.

The move isn't the only thing on Lister's plate, as he just finished teaching at a summer art camp for kids at Green Acres Center.

"It was a tricky time to do a move," Lister said. "The camp just finished up this past week."

Lister also works with Woodson and Fairfax high schools and their art students. Last year he held high school art shows that the schools both participated in.

"I go to the schools, talk with students, look at their work," said Lister. "I also ran a teen art program upstairs that I hope to continue here."

The Adam Lister Gallery is now located at 3950 University Dr. in Fairfax. We'll keep you updated on the grand re-opening of the gallery in the coming weeks.
