Woman Dead in Collision, Driver Charged

The driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and manslaughter.

A 21-year-old woman died in the early morning hours on July 4 when the car she was riding in struck two trees along Shirley Gate Road.

Medical personnel pronounced Sara Ghaffari-Nik, of Burke, dead at the scene.

She had been riding in the backseat of a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse when the driver hit the curb and lost control. The vehicle drove off the southbound side of Shirley Gate Road near Mattie Moore Court and hit a large tree. The vehicle then spun and flipped onto the driver's side, striking another tree, according to Fairfax County Police.

Ghaffari-Nik was thrown from the car. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, Hossein Ghaffari-Nik, 27, of the same Burke address, was arrested and charged with DWI and manslaughter.
